Once in a while, you meet an animal that is so incredibly friendly and brave that you’d wish your fellow humans would follow its example. Snowy is one of those animals. She’s friendly, cheerful and also does her “duty” by watching over our house and the people she feels happy with.

The most remarkable thing is that Snowy didn’t have any reasons to be cheerful when she was still a young puppy. Our friend Nancy CuUnjieng of CARA rescued her from a tough and horrible life on the streets of Manila after she had been abandoned by her owner, most likely because she had contracted mange. I’m not sure which form of mange she had (there are two common varieties, sarcoptic mange or scabies and demodectic mange) but fortunately Nancy managed to restore her coat by giving her Ivermectin, a medicine that is also used for prevention of heartworm.

After we adopted Falco, we decided that another dog that’s more “house trained” would be really nice as company for Neressa’s niece and our caretaker. So after we talked to Nancy, we really wanted to adopt Snowy and she was sent to Kalibo by Cebu Pacific Cargo, just like Falco only a few months before her. Although a bit shy at first she soon took to us and we, in turn, loved her from the very start. During our short stay I taught her to “sit” and we’d walk her on the beach which she really, really loves: she runs around in big circles like crazy and digs up small crayfish. The beach is most definitely her favourite spot.

Snowy is happy now but still a furless tail ...

Now that we’re back in the Netherlands, Snowy has become Neressa’s niece Inday’s favourite and she walks Snowy every day. Hopefully, this new generation of Filippinos will learn that animals are fun to be with and are worthy of leading decent lives, just like the humans that they share this beautiful country with. Thanks to Nancy’s treatment, Snowy’s fur has come back apart from a small patch on the tip of her tail. It’s still not clear whether that will ever come back, but to us she’s a beautiful dog no matter what. Well done Nanc! ;-)

We sincerely hope that our sweet little friend stays with us forever and guards us well. We love you Snowy!!!
